With more and more people finding themselves out of work these days, the more people are pounding the pavement looking for work. The first place most people look, at the online job boards, has become a chaotic mass of people trying to find their next high paying career.
Many people feel overwhelmed with all of the scams and hype on the job boards these days and even finding it difficult to contend for the legitimate positions! We need to revive the referral as a means of securing a high paying position.
So how do we do this? Simple, by taking a moment to jot down a list of anyone who we can attempt to leverage. Anyone is fair game, as long as they will take at least a call from you.
That was the easy part, now you actually have to go about contacting each of these people. Now depending on your specific relationship with each contact you will most likely want to approach them all a bit differently.
Resist the urge to just shoot an email. Although it is painless, it is often fruitless as well. Put the extra effort into a meeting or at the very least a phone call.
As always in a business setting, be courteous with their time and make sure you have some time to talk. Do not beat around the bush, let them know why you have contacted them and how much you appreciate them taking the time.
Now is not the time to be shy, be honest with them about what you need and ask for their help. Make sure you set a time to follow through and see what the results were( i.e.- interview, a point in the right direction and so on...)
I have found this to be the best way to get good career leads quickly. WHo doesn't want to have a referral from someone they trust working for them?
To recap, skip the job board and look to you relationships. At then end of the day, its all about who you know right? - 16755
